Philippine Teams Ranked 4th and 5th in IRML 2011

By: Alvin Belleza

Two Philippine teams participated in the recently-concluded International Mathematics Regions League (IRML), held last June 3-4, 2011 at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. The IRML is the international wing of the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML), where 15 student-member-US teams compete simultaneously in four regional sites--Penn State, the University of Georgia, the University of Iowa, and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

The IRML teams participate in four rounds of math contests: Team Round, Power Round, Individual Round and Relay Round. In the Team Round, the 15 members of the team together answer a set of 10 questions for 20 minutes. Only the final answers are required. In the Power Round, the team answers or prove a series of questions about a particular topic for one hour. Both Team and Power Rounds are written contests that took place in UNLV in the afternoon of June 3.

In the morning of June 4, the Individual and Relay Contests were held in UNLV Student Union. Both were written-oral contests. In the Individual Round, 10 questions were handed out by two’s. Each pair of questions had to be answered 10 minutes. In the Relay Round, the 15-member team was subgrouped into 3-member teams. There were two relay rounds wherein only the answer of the third person had to be checked.

Since its inception, the IRML has grown considerably. Teams from Canada have been involved almost from the beginning, and in the late 1980's, ARML invited a team from Moscow to come to the US to participate. That led to teams from Taiwan, the Philippines, Macau, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, India, Singapore and Colombia participating in the US. Offsite, the following countries participated: Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, Panama and Bulgaria.

For the 2011 IRML – Onsite Division, Philippine Team A ranked 4th in the while Philippine Team B ranked 5th. The team members were awarded medals and certificates in the Awarding Ceremony held after the Individual and Relay Rounds. The team members of the Philippine delegations are:
